At least 13 Taliban militants, including a group’s leader called Omar, were killed in Afghan forces’ airstrikes Saturday night in Bati Kot district of Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province, the provincial media outlets said.
Omar and the rest Taliban fighters killed in the raid were among thousands of the Taliban prisoners released by government as part of efforts to push for peace.
The Taliban officials have not commented yet.
Intensified hostilities in the battlefield have recently inflicted heavy casualties on combatants from both sides despite peace efforts of the two negotiating teams who push for bringing the decades-long war of Afghanistan to an end.
