A surge of targeted killings and assassinations has gripped Afghanistan, and violence has dramatically increased in recent weeks.

Those being targeted are mostly journalists, women rights activists, representatives from the civil society, peace and democracy advocates and figures from all rights spectrum.

The assassination of Yousef Rasheed, Executive Director of Free and Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan (FEFA) was the recent which has sparked widespread condemnation.

“Yousef Rasheed’s assassination is reprehensible,” said U.S. special envoy Khalilzad. “We condemn it,” and “we also condemn the recent murder of several doctors working in Puli Charkhi and women’s rights activist Farishta Kohistani,” he continued.

He warned that targeted killings and assassinations threaten the peace process and must end.

Ambassador Khalilzad urged the two sides of the negotiating table to “redouble” efforts for a political settlement and ceasefire while adding the United States is ready to support.

He also called for perpetrators of “these terrorist attacks” to be held to account.
