Coronavirus in Afghanistan: Total Cases Surpassed 51,000

The Afghan health ministry announced Tuesday (December 22) that the country has now registered 51,089 coronavirus cases and a total of 2,105 deaths since the outbreak.

Of the total 1,632 suspected cases processed, 201 tests came back positive.

In the last 24 hours, 201 more people tested positive for the highly contagious coronavirus, and 16 additional patients died after contracting it, a tally by the Afghan health ministry indicated.

Another statistic was also on rise: the number of patients recovered from the illness. According to health ministry data, the recovery toll has hit 39,784 after 83 patients got better during the last 24 hours.

At least 1,699,485 people worldwide have died from COVID-19 and more than 77.1 have been infected by the virus that causes it, following an outbreak that started in Wuhan, China, in early December.
