The vehicle the commander and three others were travelling in was hit by drone attack after the car loaded with weapons entered Syrian territory, sources told the news agency.

Reuters did not say about the commander’s identity.

Other news agencies, however, cited Iraqi security forces and local militia sources, saying Muslim Shahdan and three others died when their vehicle, carrying weapons, was hit just inside Syria after crossing from Iraq.

It came just days after top Iranian nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was also regarded as father of Iran’s nuclear-weapon program was shot and killed Friday in Damavand, east of Tehran.

State media said Fakhrizadeh was targeted by gunfire as armed men waited along the road and shot him, inflicting grave wounds to Iran’s nuclear chief scientist. Doctors’ attempts to save his life failed, and he lost the battle.

Islamic Republic’s supreme leader Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei blamed “brutal mercenaries” and called Iranian officials to investigate the crime and firmly prosecute its perpetrators and its commanders

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javid Zarif slammed assassination of Fakhrizadeh, saying Israel was likely to be involved in killing.

“Terrorists murdered an eminent Iranian scientist today. This cowardice—with serious indications of Israeli role—shows desperate warmongering of perpetrators,” Foreign Minister Zarif said in a tweet.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani meanwhile blamed Israel for the assassination and vowed to respond at the “right time”.

Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major Gen. Hossein Salami also condemned assassination of the nuclear chief, pledging “severe” retaliation from the perpetrators for the ‘big crime’.
