“The nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was assassinated today by terrorists,” the Iranian Defense Ministry said.
State media said Fakhrizadeh was targeted by gunfire as armed men waited along the road and shot him, inflicting grave wounds to Iran’s nuclear chief scientist. Doctors’ attempts to save his life failed, and he lost the battle.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javid Zarif slammed assassination of Fakhrizadeh, saying Israel was likely to be involved in killing.
“Terrorists murdered an eminent Iranian scientist today. This cowardice—with serious indications of Israeli role—shows desperate warmongering of perpetrators,” Foreign Minister Zarif said in a tweet.
Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major Gen. Hossein Salami in a message on Friday condemned assassination of the nuclear programmer, vowing “severe” retaliation from the perpetrators of the ‘big crime’.
