“In 2016, the EU showed its strong commitment to Afghanistan by pledging 1.2 billion euros over a four-year period,” said Jutta Urpilainen, the European Commissioner for International Partnerships.
“It is my pleasure to announce today that we are ready to keep this level of support for the next four years.”
The European Commissioner also said the aids are “conditional on the continued commitment to democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and gender equality.”
Speaking at the conference, Josep Borrell, European Union foreign policy chief, called for an immediate ceasefire, adding any move for “restoring” an Islamic emirate would affect EU’s supports and engagement.
“A ceasefire should not be an outcome of the (peace) processs, it should accompany the process from today,” said EU High Representative Borrell. “Any attempt to restore an Islamic emirate would have an impact on our political and financial engagement.”
Countries and international organizations which gathered at the fund-raising 2020 Afghanistan Conference at Geneva vowed to continue supporting the country torn by decades-long war and now ravaged by COVID-19 pandemic.
