U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres at Afghanistan2020 Conference said that the people of Afghanistan have made great progresses over the past two decades; Afghanistan’s economy has seen enhancement, women are working, girls and boys are being educated.
He called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to save lives, curb COVID-19 impact and better atmosphere for Afghanistan peace negotiations.
Speaking at the conference, Josep Borrell, European Union foreign policy chief, also called for an immediate ceasefire, adding moves for “restoring” an Islamic emirate would affect EU’s supports and engagement.
“A ceasefire should not be an outcome of the (peace) processs, it should accompany the process from today,” said EU High Representative Borrell. “Any attempt to restore an Islamic emirate would have an impact on our political and financial engagement.”
The European Union has pledged $1.2 billion to Afghanistan for the next four years.
