Afghan health authorities reported 166 new positive cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, taking the total number of confirmed infections to 42,463.

Cold weather and large gatherings at indoors spaces have caused a surge in cases, said Masooma Jafari, a deputy spokeswoman for the Afghan Public Health Ministry.

Country is bracing for a second ‘wave’ of Covid-19 infections, the spokeswoman didn’t deny to confirm, but added the health ministry will encourage people to wear face masks.

So far there have been 1,577 confirmed deaths in the country, with three patients losing the battle for their lives.

The toll of recoveries hit 34,954 after 233 patients got better during the previous 24-hours period.
