The attack on Kabul University in Afghanistan’s capital on Monday claimed by ISIS/Daesh came as three gunmen stormed the university yesterday around 11:30am, Afghanistan time.
The Afghan Ministry of Public Health confirmed at least 22 dead and 22 others wounded in the attack.
Many students were trapped inside the university and others fled and scrambled over the university walls, as footage published on social media showed.
There has been widespread and vehement condemnation of the attack.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called the attack “despicable act of terror” and declared Tuesday a national day of mourning to pay tribute for the victims.
First Vice President Amrullah Saleh, however, called yesterday’s “stinking & non justifiable attack” on Kabul University an “intelligence failure”.
“The Talibs, their like minded satanic allies in the next door won’t be ever able to wash their conscience,” VP Amrullah Saleh took to Twitter.
The Afghan chairman of high peace council, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, also expressed condemnation over what he called a “cowardly terrorist attack”. “Targeting educational institutions is a heinous crime,” he said.
NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative, Stefano Pontecorvo, UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, the European Union, the Taliban group, as well as social media users and from across the political spectrum condemned the university attack.
Kabul University attack followed another in less than two weeks that targeted an educational center in west of the Afghan capital.
An explosion struck outside the Kawsar-e Danish educational center in the Pul-e Khoshk area of Dasht-e Barchi in west Kabul on October 24.
The Afghan Interior Ministry put the toll of casualties to 24 killed and dozens more wounded.
For this attack too, the ISIS/Daesh claimed it was behind.
