Herat’s Health Department said the bodies of at least eight killed in the riot and twelve wounded were rushed to hospital.
At least eight were killed and another 12, including prison guards, were injured after clashes erupted Wednesday night in a prison in the provincial capital of western Herat province, said Mohammad Rafiq Shirzai, a spokesman for the provincial health department.
Speaking to TKG, Maiwand Samadi, head of central Herat prison, said the clashes began yesterday evening and lasted for hours.
He put the toll of casualties to one killed and ten others were wounded during the riot.
The facility holds roughly 2,000 prisoners, according to sources.
