Doha: U.S. Envoy for Afghanistan Meets Taliban Officials

The U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad and Commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan Gen. Scott Miller held a meeting in Doha with the head of the Taliban Mullah Baradar and other officials, said Mohammad Naeem Wardak, a Taliban spokesman, to discuss the implementation of the Doha agreement.

According to the spokesman, the two sides also discussed “the release of the remaining prisoners, the termination of the Blacklist.” They also discussed causes of increase in the level of violence, he continued.

“…the humiliation of the martyrs’ bodies, conducting raids on the released prisoners and their killing, the bombardment, offensives and the violation of the agreement overall” were to be the main causes of recent escalation in violence, Mohammad Naeem Wardak further added.

The meeting comes as the U.S. envoy said in a tweet Tuesday that he returned “to the region disappointed that despite commitments to lower violence, it has not happened.”

“The window to achieve a political settlement will not stay open forever,” Ambassador Khalilzad said.
