The Taliban militants planned to attack security outposts belonging to uprising forces in Chal district of Takhar province, but government troops thwarted their attack, said Khalil Aseer, a spokesman for the provincial police chief.
During the hours-long clashes, at least six Taliban militants—including their group leader Qari Ghafoor—were killed and seven others wounded, the spokesman added.
The militant group has not responded to claims so far.
There has been a spike in violence between Taliban and Afghan forces in the country recently despite negotiators from the two warring sides have already begun peace talks in Doha to end the decades-long war in Afghanistan.
