In a report, the U.N. agency said around 4.1 million people have been internally displaced in Afghanistan since 2012 due to conflict in their country.

According to the report, over 220,000 have been displaced this year while another 456,000 were forced to evacuate their homes in 2019.

The figures released by the agency indicated that more than 5,000 families—40,000 people—have fled their homes within the last ten days since the time clashes flared up between government forces and the Taliban.

Men, women and children have been forced from their homes in Nahr-e-Saraj, Nawa-e-Barakzaiy, Nad-e-Ali/Marja and Lashkargah districts by a fresh wave of fighting between the Taliban and government forces. Many ran for their lives with no belongings. Although the exact extent of new displacement is unknown, local authorities estimate more than 5,000 families (nearly 40,000 people) have fled in the last 10 days since clashes erupted, it said.

It called for an “immediate” support of Helmand’s displaced people, as per the report.

Violence has recently ramped up throughout the country, inflicting heavy casualties to both warring sides despite the ongoing peace negotiations for bringing country’s conflict to an end.
