The Taliban staged an ambush in Badakhshan province’s Kohistan district on Tuesday night, said Naik Mohammad Nazari, a provincial governor’s spokesman.
The attack was fended off by Afghan forces, leaving more than 15 Taliban insurgents killed or wounded, according to the spokesman.
He put the toll of casualties to government forces to three killed—two policemen and a district police chief who was named Abdul Zahir Nazari.
The Afghan official blamed the Taliban, but the group’s officials have yet to comment.
