The Afghan government had taken all efforts to remove last obstacles on the way to the start of the direct negotiations with the Taliban, said Najia Anwari, a spokeswoman for the State Ministry for Peace Affairs.

According to reports, the Afghan government negotiating team is expected to travel to the Qatari capital of Doha.

Meanwhile, Suhail Shaheen, a spokesman for the political office of the Taliban in Doha, said the group was ready to hold peace talks with the Afghan government after a prisoner exchange process is completed.

The process of prisoner releases has been resumed after several weeks of delay and is a final obstacle to be removed to pave the way for the start of direct talks. The intra-Afghan negotiations are set to begin next week, according to sources.

“The remaining prisoners will be released within a couple of days,” an Afghan government official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Speaking to TKG, Javed Faisal, a spokesman for the National Security Council, issued denial to reports that a remaining 120 the Taliban prisoners are set to be released today, adding the government will later state its stance.
