The figures announced by Reuters illustrated that more than 5,163,510 people have been infected with the coronavirus across the United States, while the data brought the country’s total deaths to 164,592.

In Brazil, which has the second highest number of coronavirus cases, the total of confirmed infections have risen to 3,109,630, with 103,026 related fatalities.

India, the third country with the highest number of infections has so far registered more than 2.3 million coronavirus cases. The total deaths, however, was lower than the two countries with the highest number of infections as a tally by Reuters indicated that India’s death toll hit 46,091 on Wednesday.

India is then followed by Russia with a total of 897,599 cases and 15,131 deaths, a fourth country with largest number of coronavirus cases.

An announcement was made by Russia on Tuesday that it will approve a COVID-19 vaccine after less than two months of human testing.

It, however, prompted alarm among global health experts, who said that with no full trial data, the vaccine is hard to trust.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the vaccine, developed by Gamaleya Institute in Moscow, was safe, adding his own daughter has already taken a dose.
