The United States will draw down U.S. troops in Afghanistan by 4,000 before the November presidential election, President Donald Trump said in an interview with “Axios on HBO”.

“It’s already planned. We’ll be down in a very short period of time to 8,000 [troops], then we’re going to be down to 4,000, we’re negotiating right now. We have been there for 19 years,” Trump told the media outlet. The U.S. president declined to specify the exact time but said that it would happen “very soon,” President Trump said.

The United States, under a peace deal it signed with the Taliban movement on late February, was committed to gradually draw down the number of its troops from Afghanistan.

Since the deal, it has reduced the number of troops to 8,600 from around 13,000.
