The meetings which aimed at building and strengthening regional and international consensus in support of the Afghan peace process, were held yesterday, August 04, with the participants from at least 40 countries and Kabul-based international agencies, a statement by the foreign ministry read.

According to the ministry’s statement, the meeting also discussed a Loya Jirga − a traditional large gathering of elders − that is said to be convened in the next few days over the release of 400 remaining Taliban prisoners.

The participants supported an Afghan led peace process and the Loya Jirga for deciding over the release of those Taliban prisoners who, according to the government officials, were convicted of major crimes.

The virtual meeting also discussed the necessity for the start of intra-Afghan negotiations at the earliest possible.

Earlier too, Afghanistan hosted three multilateral meetings via video, starting from July 06. Those meetings also aimed at building regional and international consensus in support of the Afghan peace process.
