Civilian Casualties Drop by 11% in First Half of 2020: AIHRC

The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) in its report released on July 14 highlighted that a toll of civilian casualties from the ongoing violence in Afghanistan indicated an 11 percent decrease.

In a report, the human rights commission has noted that during the first half of 2020, a total of 2,957 casualties was recorded. It included 1,213 deaths and 1,744 injuries, illustrating an 11% decline in casualties compared to the same period in last year.

According to AIHRC’s report, about 48.5% of the civilian casualties were attributed to the Taliban. They have killed 542 and injured 896 civilians in the first six months of the year, which indicated a 24% decrease from the same period last year.

The report further read that the pro-government forces were behind 15.5% of the civilian casualties during the first half of 2020, while international forces caused 2.3% of the casualties. The rest 6.3% of the casualties were attributed to local Islamic State affiliates.

The report added that at least 225 children were killed and another 405 injured during the first six months of the year, demonstrating a 33% decline.

The report put the toll of women casualties’ to 126 deaths and 171 injuries.

According to the report, 31 percent of the casualties caused by targeted attacks and included 533 deaths and 412 injuries.

A statistic, however, indicated a rise: Roadside bombs, sticky mines and car bomb attacks caused at least 766 civilians casualties, which represented a 7% increase.

Suicide attacks, meanwhile, caused 347 casualties, a 109% increase, according to the report. Most of the suicide attacks, as per the report, were carried out by the IS-K affiliates.

Air strikes caused 189 casualties, a 44 percent drop, compared to the same months in last year.

The AIRHC’s statement comes a day after a Taliban’s car bomb attack launched on a spy agency in north of Afghanistan, inflicting heavy civilian casulties.
