Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro confirmed to media his test for coronavirus returned positive.
Mr. Bolsonaro is one of the leaders in the world who argued for quickly lifting lockdown restrictions, saying that the economic costs outweigh public health risks.
President Bolsonaro had earlier threatened he was “studying” to pull Brazil out of the World Health Organization (WHO), after the agency warned governments in the Latin America of easing lockdown restrictions before the coronavirus outbreak slows down.
A Reuters’ coronavirus tracker reported new COVID-19 deaths within the past 24 hours, bringing the nationwide tally to 66,741 since the outbreak, whereas the overall tally of infection has risen to 1,668,589 – the second highest number in the world behind the United States.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also killed more people in Brazil than anywhere outside of the United States.
