Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro threatened on Friday he was “studying” to pull Brazil out of the World Health Organization (WHO), after the agency warned governments in the Latin America of easing lockdown restrictions before the coronavirus outbreak slows down.

“Either the WHO works without ideological bias, or we leave, too,” Mr. Bolsonaro said on Friday.

Mr. Bolsonaro is one of the leaders in the world who continues to argue for quickly lifting state isolation orders, arguing that the economic costs outweigh public health risks.

Brazil’s Health Ministry reported another 1,005 deaths on Friday night, bringing the nationwide tally to 35,026, with 30,830 new cases taking the overall tally to 645,771, the second most in the world after the United States.

The COVID-19 pandemic has now killed more people in Brazil than anywhere outside of the United States and the United Kingdom.
