May 11 (The Killid Group) — The armed Taliban released an additional 17 prisoners of the Afghan government late on Sunday’s evening, a spokesman for the group took to Twitter.
The Taliban released an additional 17 inmates of the Afghan government in the northwestern Badghis province, said Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a spokesman for the office of the insurgents in Qatar.
The armed Taliban has so far released more than 200 prisoners of the Afghan government.
As a part of the prisoner swap, the Afghan government has also freed some 1,000 Taliban prisoners it was holding in jails.
Under a peace accord struck between the United States and the Taliban, the relevant sides are committed to put efforts to release prisoners as a confidence-building measure, with the coordination and approval of all sides involved in the process.
The United States and the Taliban singed a peace pact in February 29 under which the Afghan government was required to free 5,000 Taliban prisoners and for the insurgents to release 1,000 pro-government captives in return.
