More Than 500 Civilians Killed in Afghanistan in First Quarter of 2020: UNAMA

April 27 (The Killid Group) — In a report, UNAMA has noted that during the first quarter of 2020, some 533 civilians have been killed while 760 have been injured due to the ongoing violations in Afghanistan.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in its report released on April 27, highlighted that the heavy toll of the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan continues to inflict on the civilians.

According to UNAMA’s report, much of the civilian casualties, about 55%, were attributed to the Anti-Government Elements (AGEs), in particular, the ISIL-KP and the Taliban, killing 282 and injuring 428.

The report further read that the Pro-Government Forces (PGFs) were behind 32% of all civilian casualties during the first quarter of 2020, causing 412 civilian casualties (198 killed and 214 injured).

The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, meanwhile, has expressed its serious concerns over an increase in civilians deaths.

The commission urged all parties to end the violence and move toward a ceasefire in the country.

Zabihullah Farhang, a spokesman for the human rights commission told The Killid Group reporter that directing attacks against civilian population violates both national and international laws.

The armed Taliban, on the other hand, rejected the UN’s report and called it an attempt to cover up civilian-related crimes committed by the United States and Afghan forces.

Although the main functions of the United Nations are to preserve peace and security, protect civilians, settle the international disputes and to call for scaled-up international supports for the war-ravaged countries; nevertheless, it has only documented and published casualty data.

Sayed Nasir Mosawi, an Afghan towering figure in the field of international relations, said the United Nations in recent years has been acting in favor of the world’s superpower countries, especially the United States.

According to him, UNAMA has continued to play a passive role in recent years, and has been less able to play a role in mitigating casualties.

The UN’s statement comes days after a number of national and international figures urged the Taliban to lay down arms during the holy month of Ramadan, but the group rejected the demand calling it irrational.
