March 24 (The Killid Group) – UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged for an “immediate global ceasefire”.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed Monday for an “immediate global ceasefire” to protect vulnerable civilians in conflict zones from the ravages of the coronavirus pandemic.

“It is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives,” Antonio Guterres said in a statement.

“The fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war,” he said without mentioning name of any country, adding, “That is why today, I am calling for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world,” he added.

Syria has reported its first case of the COVID-19 virus, in a country already shattered by 10 years of war, and other cases have emerged in Afghanistan and other war-torn countries.

“If the fighting goes on, we might have an absolutely devastating spreading of the epidemic,” Mr. Guterres added.

Antonio Guterres’ remarks came as Syria reported its first case of infection by COVID-19 and the toll of confirmed cases in Afghanistan, another war-devastated country, reached 42.
