March 23 (The Killid Group) – Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday urged U.S. President Donald Trump to temporarily halt sanctions on Iran, one of the worst-hit countries by COVID-19.
“I want to appeal to President Trump on humanitarian grounds to lift the sanctions against Iran till the COVID-19 pandemic is over,” the prime minister tweeted.
“The people of Iran are facing untold suffering as sanctions are crippling Iran’s efforts to fight COVID-19. Humanity must unite to fight this pandemic,” he added.
Under the Trump administration, the U.S. withdrew from a landmark nuclear deal and began re-imposing punishing sanctions on Iran in 2018, blocking banking transactions and oil sales, among other sectors.
Moreover, tensions between the two countries escalated when the U.S. assassinated top Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani in January. Iran responded by attacking military bases in Iraq hosting American troops, which left multiple U.S. soldiers injured in the attack.
