(TKG) − Protests related to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) turned to violence on Monday, February 24, in Maujpur and Jaffrabad areas of North East Delhi as pro and anti-CAA protesters clashed with each other, media reported.

According to media reports, Indian capital witnessed fresh clashes over the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) that resulted in the death of six civilians and a policeman.

The situation de-escalated on late yesterday evening but left at least 50 others people injured.

The violent clashes have coincided with US President Donald Trump’s maiden visit to New Delhi, where he will spend most of Wednesday, February 26.

The CAA offers amnesty to non-Muslim illegal immigrants from three neighboring Muslim-majority countries that, according to some critics and the anti-CAA protesters, marginalizes Muslim minority.

Last year, the Citizenship Amendment Act was approved under which only non-Muslim minorities – Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Christians, Sikhs and Parsis – who fled from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan would be given Indian citizenship.
