(TKG) − An American contractor was captured by Taliban-aligned militants in Afghanistan last week, triggering a country-wide recovery effort, Newsweek has reported.
Mark R. Frerichs of Lombard, Illinois, was kidnapped last Friday in the southeastern Khost province of Afghanistan, U.S. officials told Newsweek.
The U.S. officials spoke to Newsweek news agency on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the details publicly.
So far no militant group has claimed responsibility for the abduction, but the U.S. officials believe the Haqqani network, a group aligned with the Taliban, is responsible.
Mark Frerichs, a civil engineer who routinely travels to conflict zones to consult on logistical contracts, was abducted in Khost earlier on Friday, January 31.
