(TKG) − Witnesses told Reuters news agency that Thursday, January 30, during a protest against India’s new citizenship law (Citizenship Amendment Act/Bill) near a university in Delhi, an unidentified gunman fired at the protest, wounding one person.
According to the witnesses as saying to Reuters, the gunman shouted slogans against the protesters near Jamia Millia Islamia University, before shooting at them.
Police said they had subsequently arrested the gunman.
Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, which fast-tracks Indian citizenship for non-Muslim minorities from three neighboring countries, have flared since last December.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill/Act was first introduced in 2016 by the Hindu nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi but was withdrawn after an alliance partner withdrew support and protests flared in India’s remote and ethnically diverse northeastern region.
