(TKG) ─ Dozens of Iraqi protesters were wounded in Baghdad and other cities on Monday [January 20, 2020] in clashes with security forces who were trying to clear blocked roads, as anti-government demonstrations resumed after several weeks, media reported.
After several weeks, protesters once again occupied stretches of roads in different cities of Iraq that, reportedly, led to clashes with police forces as they (the police) attempted to clear the blocked roads.
Reuters news agency reported, in Baghdad’s Tayaran Square overnight, protesters threw petrol bombs and stones at police who responded with tear gas and stun grenades.
In southern Iraq, as well, hundreds of protesters burned tires and blocked main roads in several cities, including Nassiriya, Kerbala and Amara, saying that Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has not fulfilled promises including naming a new government acceptable to Iraqis.
