(TKG) ─ UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke to Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi by phone, urging Iraqi government to allow UK troops to stay in the country following the US assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani.
The appeal comes after Iraq’s parliament passed on Sunday [January 5, 2020] a resolution calling on the government to end all foreign troop presence in Iraq, as backlash grew after the killing of a top Iranian military commander and an Iraqi militia leader in a US strike in Baghdad.
The two sides further discussed “the need to deescalate tensions in the region following the death of Qasem Soleimani.”
The British Prime Minister underlined the “UK’s unwavering commitment to Iraq’s stability and sovereignty and emphasized the importance of the continued fight against the shared threat from ISIS.”
