BAMYAN (The Killid) – Equality for Peace and Democracy launched a 35-day cosmetology training course for Afghan women in the province, aimed at empowering and creating independent atmosphere for women.

Shela Qayemi, an EPD coordinator, said the course aims to provide support for Afghan women, as well as help them create an independent atmosphere where they could present themselves as part of the bigger community.

According to Qayemi, at least 220 women in the field of tailoring, cosmetology, and garment weaving will be benefiting from the two-year project, which is funded by Italian Embassy.

The project has so far 76 graduates in tailoring, for who the project provided sewing machines.

Meanwhile, young afghan women, who joined the program, said they warmly welcomed such an initiatives will surely pave the way for them to get employed in their desired field after graduation.

Head of the provincial Women’s Affairs directorate Hawa Gul said such a program in deed breaks the ice for women to open businesses in city, which is uncommon in a highly conservative society, adding at least 60 women currently are retailer or owner of certain shop in the province.

Bamyan is one of the provinces in central Afghanistan, where women at some level takes equal part as men – sports and businesses for instance.
