The Afghan presidential election due to 28 September will be a “key moment to reaffirm the legitimacy of Afghanistan’s democratic political structure”, Tadamichi Yamamoto, Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA said at UN Security Council on Wednesday.

He said the Election Commissions, political leaders, candidates and international partners should help deliver credible and timely elections.

“Afghan citizens have displayed an enduring commitment to choosing their political leaders through elections in the face of threats and adverse security conditions,” Yamamoto said, as local media quoted.

It comes at a time Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, presented a 16-page report to the United Nations Security Council Wednesday, reflecting on wide-ranges of issues, mainly security and peace in Afghanistan.
