United States Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad held talks with Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa Friday, following his multi-nation trips after Afghanistan.
While admiring Pakistan for their constructive role in peace and stability in Afghanistan, Khalilzad talked out issues around regional security and the ongoing peace efforts in the country.
“During the meeting overall regional security situation with particular reference to ongoing Afghan reconciliation process were discussed,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a press release Friday. “The visiting dignitary appreciated Pakistan’s efforts towards peace process.”
Khalilzad also met Pakistani Foreign Ministrer Shah Mehmood Qureshi in Islamabad, where he briefed Qureshi on the outcome of Doha talks and his recent engagement in the region, as well as previous talks in Afghanistan – discussing ongoing peace efforts and role of young generation, including women.
Qureshi, appreciating his efforts, reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the peace process, adding intra-Afghan dialogue is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
Pakistan wishes Afghanistan well for peace and stability, elaborating Pakistan’s own vision for economic and human development will benefit.
Meanwhile, Khalilzad had a comprehensive talks with Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, where she briefed US envoy on a telephonic conversation between Qureshi and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
She cited their mutual interest in pushing through the efforts for peace and said they would remain engaged to pursue the reconciliation process.
This comes at a time Khalilzad, embarked his multi-nation trips in a bid to further get through the process for better yet peaceful Afghanistan.

Previously, Khalilzad held meetings with the government officials in Afghanistan, women in the capital city of Kabul, and elderlies in the provinces, including young generations, where they discussed their shared values and joint cooperation for better security in Afghanistan.
