United States President Donald Trump, in a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House Tuesday, said war in Afghanistan is “unfortunate” and “ridiculous”.

On the other hand, he said that a lot of positive things are happening in Afghanistan more recently.

“I think we’ve made a lot of great strides recently in Afghanistan. It’s — we call it the “endless war.” Nineteen years. The real number is 19 years. It’s unfortunate. It’s ridiculous. And it’s been a very interesting period of time,” Trump said as local media quoted.

Trump reiterated that Afghanistan have recently been witnessing positive moves and are crossed fingers for the outcome, while appreciating efforts by NATO holding Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan aimed at ending the long-lasting war.

“But we’ve made a lot of strides. A lot of things are happening in Afghanistan that are very positive. So we’ll see how that all comes out. And I appreciate your [NATO’s] help,” said Trump.

Meanwhile, Stoltenberg said that NATO allies strongly believe that it is “important to support the US efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis or the war in Afghanistan.”

It comes amid efforts by the United States, whose special representative Zalmay Khalilzad has held multiple rounds of peace talks with the Taliban, during which both sides have agreed on drafted papers regarding US troops withdrawal still in Afghanistan and assurance that the Taliban will not use Afghanistan as springboard for attacks against other nations.
