Protesters Gather at Gaza Strip, End in ‘Confrontations’

Organizers came along at Malaka camp, east of Gaza City on Saturday, marking the one year marches near the perimeter fence that is initially organized by grassroots activists.

Ambulances were lined up, tents were being settled and emergency crew were all geared up for receiving possible victims, as they were finger crossed for a somewhat impossible peaceful protest at Gaza Strip camps.

“The tents and medical points were prepared in all the Gaza Strip camps, and as you can see, another tent is being prepared so it can receive scores of wounded in case there are wounded,” said Mohammad Abu Selmiya, head of Emergency Committee in Gaza, AP quoted.

The border marches routinely ended in confrontations, with some of the Palestinian demonstrators burning tires, hurling firebombs or setting off explosives and Israeli troops firing live rounds and tear gas.

According to a Gaza rights group and a count by The Associated Press, 196 Palestinians were killed in the demonstrations over the past year, including 41 minors, and thousands were wounded by live fire.

An Israeli soldier was also killed in the context of the marches.

Meanwhile, a general strike called for by Hamas has paralyzed Gaza City to give workers and students time to participate in the protests, AP wrote.
