As the news on two agreements between the United States and Taliban spread wings around the globe, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said, as an outstanding stakeholder in Afghan peace process, Islamabad wants a “responsible” withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.
Addressing a press conference with his German counterpart Heiko Maas on Tuesday, Qureshi said Pakistan had been saying for long that Afghan issue could only be resolved through dialogue. “We are glad that now the world was acknowledging our version,” Qureshi added, as local media quoted.
He said a responsible pullout of the foreign troops would work best for the interest of not only Pakistan, but also the entire region.
Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister said terrorism is a global challenge, adding it would be best if Afghan government could take part in the process for betterment and peace in the region.
“Pakistan is playing an important role in Afghanistan, being a responsible regional country also, we think that Afghan government has to be part of the process for a sustainable peace in the region,” he added.
“We feel that inclusion of Afghan government in every table talk is imperative,” he further added.
The comments come after the fifth round of peace talks between the US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad and the Taliban delegations sparked world attention since late Tuesday, citing both sides summed up to an “agreement in draft” on foreign troops withdrawal and counterterrorism.
