Sudan President Omar al-Bashir on Friday ordered the release of all women protesters detained in connection with anti-government demonstrations nationwide, which comes on International Women’s Day.

During a meeting on Friday at his residence, Bashir made the announcement to release all women who have been detained in connection with protests since December.

“I order Salah Ghosh to release all women detainees,” Bashir said at the meeting, referring to the chief of the powerful National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) that has led a sweeping crackdown on protesters, Daily Mail quoted.

Anti-government activists estimate that more than 150 women are currently in prison for participating in protests, who are ordered to be freed.

Sudan has seen near-daily protests against Bashir since December last year. The demonstrations were triggered by price increases and cash shortages but developed into the most sustained challenge to Bashir since he took power in a military coup three decades ago.
