U.S.-Taliban to Pursue Peace Talks Next Week

United States Special Envoy Zalmay khalilzad and the Taliban delegations will pursue peace talks next week, as both parties have agreed on a two-day break in ongoing Doha talks.

“The meetings ended last night as both negotiation teams agreed to take a break today and tomorrow for consultations and preparation for the third meeting which shall be held on Saturday,” a statement from the Taliban read.

The statement added that Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the political deputy of the group met with Qatar Foreign Affairs Minister Abdul Rahman al-Thani, National Security Advisor Muhammad al-Masnad, US Special Representative Zalmay Khalilzad and commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan Scott Miller.

Both parties had extensive talks on sustainable peace in Afghanistan – mainly on a precise timetable for withdrawing US troop in the country, and necessary steps ensuring Afghanistan will not be used as threating place against the US and others nations.

Following Moscow talks, this marks the fifth round of negotiations between the US and Taliban delegations on peace in Afghanistan.
