The United States has once again asked Pakistan to work with neighbouring countries, including Afghanistan, to bring peace and stability to the region.

“So, with respect to Pakistan, we have opportunities with Pakistan,” Pentagon chief spokesperson Dana White told a media briefing in Washington.

Pakistani newspaper Dawn quoted the spokesperson as renewing America’s continued support to Afghanistan, where insurgent attacks have seen a sharp spike in recent months.

The United States and Pakistan had many opportunities to work together for defeating terrorism and restoring stability in Afghanistan, the official believed.

The Trump administration’s assurances of support came after a series of terrorist attacks in Kabul that killed hundreds of civilians, including nine media professionals.

The assaults triggered media speculation that the Trump administration could rethink its pledge to stay engaged with Afghanistan if the situation worsened.

According to some reports, new Secretary of State Mike Pompeo may support proposals for pulling out US troops from Afghanistan if the situation does not get better.

Asked if Islamabad was supportive of Washington’s efforts to defeat terrorism in Afghanistan, White replied, “We think Pakistan can do more, and we’ll look to them and work with them to find opportunities to further regional security.”
