Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia Ulema Conference Set for May 11

Religious scholars from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indonesia will meet in Jakarta on Friday (May 11) on ways and means of ending the conflict in the Central Asian country.

High Peace Council Secretary Akram Khpalwak announced the date of the Ulema conference late Friday night after talks with Indonesian leaders in Jakarta.

Khpalwak, also a presidential advisor, said a 20-member delegation of Afghan scholars would take part in the three-way Ulema conference, proposed by Indonesian President Joko Widodo in January.

While commending Indonesia’s sincere support for the Afghan peace process, he tweeted, “Renowned scholars from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indonesia will participate in this conference on peace and stability in Afghanistan.”

Jakarta is optimistic the talks will lead to a fatwa (edict) to convince the Taliban into launching into peace negotiations with the Afghan government.
