Mike Pence, Ghani Discuss Balkh Problem

US Vice President Mike Pence spoke with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani by phone on Tuesday and emphasised his support for the Afghan government to engage with Balkh Governor Atta and conduct a peacefully negotiated transition of leadership.
A press release from White House stated that Pence highlighted Kabul’s continued engagement and critical progress on necessary reforms, political inclusion, and preparations for forthcoming elections.
The statement added that Pence discussed the security situation in Afghanistan and the impact of President Donald Trump’s South Asia strategy.
The statement further stated that Pence and Ghani both commended the bravery and sacrifices that US, Coalition, and Afghan soldiers have made in fighting the insurgency and international terrorists, such as Daesh and al-Qaeda.
The Vice President and Ghani reaffirmed the enduring bonds and close alliance between the United States and Afghanistan.
