Local officials in Herat said that eight Taliban insurgents were either killed or injured in clashes with Afghan security forces in Shendand district.
Jailani Farhad, spokesman for Herat governor, said that the incident happened last night in Salmlan area of the district when Taliban insurgents wanted to lay landmines in the area.
He added that three Taliban insurgents were killed and five injured.
There were no reports of casualties among Afghan security forces or civilians.
Taliban militants are yet to comment.
