Hundreds of Taliban Convene in Herat’s Chesht to Attack Salma Dam

Sources in Chesht district of Herat reported that hundreds of Taliban insurgents have convened in the district in a move to launch a probable attack on Salma Dam. They said that some 400 Taliban insurgents have come from Badghis and Ghor provinces and likely to launch an attack on Salma Dam.

Farhad Khademi, district governor of Chesht, told Killid that they have shared their security concerns with senior security officials in Herat.

Meanwhile Najibullah Najibi, spokesman for Zafar 207 Corps, asserted that security forces are ready to crack down on insurgents in the district.

The hydroelectric dam project, which underwent an extensive 300 million USD refurbishment that was completed in 2016, has been a target of Taliban attacks in the past and is heavily guarded. The dam is more than 100 metres high and 540 metres wide and is designed to generate 42 megawatts of power and help irrigate 75,000 hectares of land for Herat Province.
