The election for the next prime minister of Pakistan will be held on Tuesday, August 1, Pakistani media reported on Saturday, a day after former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court from holding his lower house seat. Nawaz’s brother, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, has been nominated as the party’s candidate for prime minister.
According to the schedule for the election issued by the National Assembly Secretariat on Saturday night, nomination papers for the premier’s slot will be available to members of the National Assembly at 3:00 pm on Sunday and can be submitted till 2:00 pm on July 31. Meanwhile Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is expected to take over as interim prime minister until Shahbaz is elected to parliament, and then to the prime minister’s office.
