Residents of Tapa Shor and Kaldar districts of Balk complained houses were destroyed by the overflowing spillway on the Amu River (Oxus). Agricultural farms, schools, clinics, and houses are destroyed every year between May and August when the water in the spillway rises. He added that millions of dollars are spent on repairing the river’s banks. The Oxus is the Afghanistan’s border with Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan – a stretch of 1,200 kms. Every year, the river swallows hundreds of homes and hundreds of thousands of hectares of land along with hundreds of animals.
