Marines Take Over Advising Mission in Helmand

US 18-month military mission has been completed in Helmand province and marines’ 300-person Task Force Southwest took over the training and advising mission there. A press release from Helmand governor’s office stated that the transfer-of-authority ceremony was held at Camp Shorab yesterday. Brigadier General Wali Mohammad Ahmadzai, commander of Atal 205 Corps, said that the 18-month mission of Task Force Forge, an army unit which has been in Helmand since last year, was very effective for Afghan National Security and Defense Forces (ANDSF). General Roger Turner Jr, Task Force Southwest Commander, said, “We are excited to be back in Helmand, and we’re pleased to assume this mission.” Meanwhile Task Force Southwest will stay in Helmand for nine months. Resolute support, which is waiting for the White House’s revised Afghanistan strategy, has not yet announced whether another unit will replace them.
