The European Union (EU), in its fourth and final phase of the 2017 anti-corruption campaign focusing on corruption in the security sector, expressed concerns over corruption in the Afghan security sectors. The latest EU report sent to media stated that corruption hampers the effectiveness of the security forces allowing Taleban to draw strength in many battlefields. The report stated that corruption kills Afghans every week – because weapons, ammunition and other supplies have been sold off to Taleban. According to the report, corruption stands in the way of achieving peace for Afghans. European Union Special Representative for Afghanistan Franz-Michael Mellbin said, “Peace in Afghanistan is possible. But to get there we need to see several things happen. Very important is that the Afghan Security Forces continue to improve their abilities to deny the Taleban major progress in the battlefield. A continued professionalisation of the security forces is needed, especially focusing on better leadership. Also, we need to see a reinforced fight against corruption in the security forces – both the army and the police. Corruption seriously hampers the effectiveness of the security forces.” Meanwhile Ministry of Defence (MoD) rejected the charges of corruption but the Ministry of Interior Affairs (MoI) said that efforts are underway to identify corrupt individuals in police ranks.
