IFRC Publishes 2016 World Disaster Report

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) released its annual report on natural disaster for 2016. Afghanistan is placed fourth among those countries frequently hit by natural calamities. Officials of Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) said that research shows Afghanistan witnessed 100 events that resulted in the death of at least 473 people and displaced tens of families. Meanwhile officials in the natural disaster management asserted that their organisation was moving toward professionalism. State Minister for Natural Disaster Management Wais Ahmad Barmak said that despite spending millions of dollars; nothing much has changed and natural calamities remain a threat to the country. According to the report, natural disasters took 32,000 lives across the world and affected 108 million people worldwide. The report further stated that natural tragedies cost losses worth 70.3 billion USD. Countries have allocated 3.3 trillion USD for relief and rescue operations after natural disasters.
