Senior military officials from Afghanistan and Pakistan on Tuesday spoke over the ‘hotline’ in a first such contact since the line was set up last year as part of efforts to ensure better communication and coordination between the two countries. “First hotline communication took place between Commander of the Southern Command Lt Gen Aamir Riaz and commander of the Afghan National Army’s 205 corps Lt Gen Daud Shah Wafadar,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement. Pakistani media reported that both sides discussed issues related to Afghan-Pak border, and expressed satisfaction over establishment of the hotline and vowed to continue such interactions in future. This comes as relations between the two neighbours have been tense for months primarily because of growing mistrust over the issue of how to deal with the problem of militancy. Both sides accuse the other of sponsoring terrorism.
