The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) announced that requests for cancellation of Afghanistan citizenship have decreased since the formation of national unity government. A press release from MoJ sent to media stated that there had been fewer requests for cancellation of Afghanistan citizenship before 2013 but between 2013 and 2015 some 1,000 Afghan renounced their citizenship. The statement added that some 800 people requested to cancel their citizenship after formation of national unity government which shows 20 percent decrease. The MoJ further stated that 102 foreigners applied for Afghanistan citizenship between 2015 and 2016.
